There are a number of solutions and remedies to dogs that feel separation anxiety, and all have advantages and disadvantages that are attached.
In the following article, I'll outline some of the main methods most commonly used to treat feelings of separation anxiety within dogs, concluding with what I see as most effective in the long term - obedience training.
Medication Some sources on the internet cite medication as a viable measure against separation anxiety.
Truthfully, it's a problem that can be solved outside of using chemicals that might have complications that affect your dogs health in further ways.
If you start the other methods from when the dog is a puppy, they will be ingrained enough not to ever lead to situations which need medication.
However, if the separation anxiety is affecting your dogs health that much you should really consult a vet before taking any further action.
One of the common prescribed medications for anxiety within dogs is Clomicalm, but again this should only ever be used with prior consultation with a trained veterinarian.
Obedience Training Obedience training works in two main ways to calm feelings of separation anxiety, and consequently is the method most commonly used.
Firstly, it helps to ensure that a visible hierarchy is established.
One of the reasons that underlies separation anxiety is the dog being concerned for your well being and safety.
This arises from them being mistaken as to being in charge or leading the group.
Through obedience training and the commands involved, a clear power structure is established, placing you, the owner, in charge.
Secondly, obedience training helps to modify the behaviour of your dog.
By acting to compliment and negate certain behaviours of your dog, over time the anxiety it feels is calmed down considerably.
If your dog is overly excited when you come back (a classic example of them being anxious when you're gone), then simply ignoring them or at the very least not fussing over them when you arrive back is helpful.
In conclusion then, it's obvious to see the benefits of obedience training over medication.
Not only does it reduce the likelihood of medical complications, but it helps in forging a bond between you and your dog that will last a lifetime.
It doesn't just stop at curbing anxiety though.
