How to Care for a Dog's Eyes

    • 1). Bath your dog regularly. Giving your dog baths with ensure you have an opportunity to properly clean around his eyes. Be very gentle so you don’t cause injury and never allow soap near his eyes. This can cause irritation. Some canine owners wonder how often they should bathe their dog. The answer to this question depends. Some dogs can tolerate being bathed weekly, while others should be bathed monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. Look at how shiny your dog’s coat appears. If your canine has a dull coat, you may be bathing too often which stripes his natural oils from the coat.

    • 2). Keep hair around your dog’s eyes trimmed. If hair gets into your dog’s eyes, this may cause irritation.Trimming hair around the eyes will help prevent this problem. Be very careful when trimming around the eyes to avoid injury. If you aren’t comfortable doing this task yourself, ask your vet or local groomer.

    • 3). Examine eyes routinely. Look for suspicious discharge, inflammation and bumps. If you observed anything suspicious, contact the vet for an evaluation.

    • 4). Examine toys carefully. Some toys can be harmful to your dog’s eyes. Sharp sticks or toys with sharp edges should be removed.

    • 5). Respond to infection immediately. Some dog owners don’t respond immediately when noticing something suspicious. Because the eyes are so important to your dog’s health, anything suspicious should be looked at immediately.
